West Hampstead Area Guide
Known as West End until the arrival of the railway in early 1900s, its name was changed to avoid confusion with the other well known London area. It is now a vibrant area of mainly young professionals with a great community vibe. The friendly spirit has also brought with it a mix of down to earth celebrities who can sometimes be seen frequenting its shops and eateries.
The Victorian era brought leafy streets and an attractive mixture of grand villas, large and attractive mansions and the larger Victorian houses. For many years, it was forgotten as an area but has recently seen a great deal of development and investment, not surprising given its excellent transport links into London and the financial district of Canary Wharf.
While it now has the usual chain stores and coffee shops, it has still retained the village feel with its many independent stores that add variety to the area. A farmers market at the weekend is a great place to stock up on organic and tasty produce fresh from the fields.
While you won’t get tired of nights out in the area’s pubs and restaurants and it even boasts a couple of nightclubs and late night bars, London and the West End (the famous one) are a short Tube or train ride away.
Within walking distance you have green spaces to escape or a short distance away you have the enormous Hampstead Heath to explore.
